would someone please explain eurovision to me?

A song contest of all European countries (and Israel) that has been around for quite a few decades. Each country enters with a song and in the end countries can vote for each other (but not for themselves). They can give points to a few different countries; 12 to the one they love best, 10 to the second, then 8,7,6 etc. Part of it is done by televoting, and part by judges.

Since there are lots more countries than a few decades ago, there are two semi finals now. Today is the final. It is held by Sweden, because they won last year.

It’s famous for having many crazy acts, ABBA (which became famous after they sang Waterloo on Eurovision) and drama surrounding the points.

Some countries tend to vote for their neighbours. Most famous are Greece and Cyprus always giving each other 12 points, but there is also a clear eastern block. Other countries NEVER vote for each other. Some countries give 12 points to one, who doesn’t return any, etc

To sum it up, it’s just a lot of innocent, glittery fun and a chance for Europeans to see more of their neighbours. Australia is becoming a honory member; they graciously send a fan-video in on the 1st semi finals.

You can watch it online if you’re not in Europe: http://www.eurovision.tv/page/timeline

Or check stuff out on Youtube. Just type Romania eurovision and you’ll get a feel for it ;)

This is a picture of a brazilian kid who was part of the “cultural group of reggae”, playing his instrument in the funeral of his mentor who saved him from an environment of poverty and crime. He was rescued from the street.

Europe I have almost forgiven you for Montenegro due to you seeing the light with Greece and Romania!

The only reason I watch Eurovision is to listen to Graham Norton commenting on the contestants

He is?

Might watch it on BBC then
